What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy (OT) helps children, teens and adults take part in the everyday activities they need and want to do - at home, at school, at work and in the community. In OT, these everyday activities are called occupations.

At Total Health Orange, our occupational therapists in Orange and trained therapy assistants support people with a wide range of needs, with a focus on improving function, building independence and helping clients reach meaningful goals

How our therapy assistants support your goals

Our therapy assistants are trained and supervised by our occupational therapists to deliver effective, goal-led therapy for children and young adults. They can be a cost-effective option when regular therapy is recommended and may help reduce wait times.

Therapy assistant sessions may take place:

  • in the clinic

  • at school

  • at home

  • in the community

They also support group programs, home programs and skill-building sessions aligned with your OT plan.

Support for ADHD & Autism Level 1 in mainstream school

Many families contact us when a child is bright and capable, but finding school and daily routines harder than expected - especially with ADHD or Autism (ASD Level 1) in a mainstream classroom.

We can support children to build skills and confidence with:

  • attention, concentration and self-regulation

  • emotional regulation and flexible thinking

  • executive functioning (organisation, planning, getting started, transitions)

  • sensory processing and classroom participation

  • practical strategies for home routines and school mornings

  • Not sure if you have ADHD, our psychology team can help to complete your assessment

What to expect when you engage our Occupational Therapy services

If you have concerns about your child’s development, a young person’s daily functioning, or your own goals, we recommend completing a referral for an appointment with an experienced occupational therapist.

Initial assessment

Your OT will complete an assessment to understand strengths, challenges and goals, then develop a practical plan to support progress.

Your plan and next steps

Depending on your needs, your plan may include:

  • therapy sessions with your occupational therapist

  • support from an exercise physiologist or therapy assistant (where appropriate)

  • a tailored home program

  • group sessions focused on specific goals

Our focus is practical, goal-led therapy - helping you move forward with confidence and achieve meaningful progress.
